Use: Salvianolic acid B showed a protective action against the ischemia-reperfusion induced injury in rat brain by reducing lipid peroxides, scavenging free radicals and improving the energy metabolism. In cerebral ischemia rats, Sal B reduced learning and memory dysfunctions induced by ischemia. Moreover, salvianolic acids, including Sal B, were shown to improve regional cerebral blood flow in the ischemic hemisphere and inhibit platelet aggregation in rats. More recently, Sal B was reported to be capable of improving the recovery of motor function after cerebral ischemia in rats. However, the mechanism responsible for such protective effects remains largely unknown. It has been considered that cerebral endothelium apoptosis caused by reactive oxygen species including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is implicated in the pathogenesis of cerebrovascular disorders. It was shown to inhibit apoptosis in many cell types, also inhibits apoptosis that is induced by the death receptor in the HL-7702 hepatocyte cell line. Sal B can effectively inhibit hepatocyte apoptosis as well as the underlying mechanisms related to regulating mediators in death receptor and mitochondrial pathways.
