hexamethylene tetramine
1,5,7-tetraazatricyclo[3.3.1.13,7]decane

Notes:
an anti-infective agent most commonly used in the treatment of urinary tract infections. its anti-infective action derives from the slow release of formaldehyde by hydrolysis at acidic ph. (from martindale, the extra pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p173) Antimicrobial food preservative, but limited and declining use. Acts by releasing formaldehyde in acidic conditions. Prevents "late blowing" of hard cheese by inhibiting growth of unwanted bacteria. Presently (2002) its European use is limited to one type of Italian cheese, Provolone
